This study was commissioned by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS)’s Science Applications program in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. The goals of this research were developed in coordination with Deanna Spooner, the Pacific Islands Climate Change Cooperative (PICCC)’s Coordinator from 2010 to 2018. Principal Investigator Susanne Moser (Susanne Moser Research and Consulting) was contracted by the USFWS as the external evaluator and the research was conducted in collaboration with Co-Investigator Wendy Miles, a former employee of the PICCC whose time on this project was supported by Susanne Moser Research and Consulting and the USFWS.
The authors would like to thank the many natural and biocultural resource managers who shared their manaʻo through interviews and survey responses. Their wisdom is reflected in the pages of this report, providing insights for the next leg of Hawaiʻi’s journey towards environmental and community resilience. We would also like to express our appreciation to the organizations and agencies that comprised the PICCC Steering Committee and lent their support by helping to promote the survey and gather the necessary information for this research study. We hope the lessons identified and shared in this report will be useful to them in their work going forward.
