It is not uncommon for companies in China to reduce their hiring activities or implement layoffs and salary reductions due to COVID-19 and the volatile economic climate. In the fast-changing VUCA era, the ability to capture the elements of certainty and stability has become even more valuable.

The pandemic has led many people to reevaluate their relationship with work, rethink their purpose, the employer-employee dynamics and what they want out of their careers. Employers and employees have also become more flexible, experienced and resilient. 

2022 marks the 10th year of Randstad Employer Brand Research in China. For the first time in 10 years, 'job security' (58%) has overtaken 'attractive salary and benefits' to take first place. Three drivers come 2nd to job security and are all of equal importance (54%): salary & benefits, work-life balance and strong financial health. Career progression came in 3rd on the list (52%).

There remains a gap between what employees expect and what China’s employers are perceived to offer. Companies looking to hire the best talent need to understand that job seekers will always be looking to pursue their dream job. For some people, that means one with job security, and for others it could be a flexible and agile work environment that is open to changes.
