In 2020, SVB Capital and Campden Wealth partnered to create the first-of-its kind report on Family Offices (FOs) investing in Venture Capital (VC). The report quickly became the go-to resource both for mature FOs looking to expand VC operations / benchmark their activities, and for FOs just starting on their venture investing journey.

In 2021, we teamed up again to provide deeper insights about how family offices, globally, invest in venture. We collected data from 139 FOs across 30 countries and released A Roadmap to VC Success, available at svb.com/family-office-report-2021. The report introduced the family office venture investing maturity model, i.e., how families progress through different stages of VC investing.

We are now excited to share our January 2022 issue, a deep dive into family office venture portfolio performance and composition.

Based on our survey, returns from venture investments exceeded expectations: the average internal rate of return (IRR) for FO VC portfolios was 24% in the 12 months prior to data collection (versus 14% in 2020).
