While current agri-food productlon models rely on abundantsupplles of water, energy. and arable land and generate slgnificant greenhousegas emIsslons in additlon to forest and blodiversity loss,past practlces poInttoward more affordable and sustalnable paths.

Different forms of Insect farming and solless crop farmIng, or hydroponIcs,have exlsted for centurles. In thIls report the authors make a persuasivecase that frontler agriculture,partlcularly Insect and hydroponic farming.can complement conventlonal agrlculture.Both technologles reuse soclety'sagrlcultural and organIc Industrlal waste to produce nutrltious food and anImalfeed without continulng to deplete the planet's land and water resources,thereby convertIng the world's wasteful linear food economy Into a sustainable,clrcular food economy.

As the report shows, Insect and hydroponIc farming can create jobs, dlverslfylivellhoods, lmprove nutritlon, and provlde many other benefits in Afrlcan andfragile, confllct-affected countrles.Together with other Investments ln cllmate-smart agrlculture, such as trees on farms, alternate wetting and drying ricesystems,conservation agrlculture, and sustainable lvestock, these technol-ogles are part of a promlsIng menu of solutlons that can help countrles movethelr land, food, water, and agrlculture systems toward greater sustalnablltyand reduced emlsslons.Thls Is a key conslderatlon as the World Bank renewslts commltment to support countries'clilmate actlon plans.

ThIs book ls the World Bank's first attempt to look at Insect and hydroponlcfarmIng as posslble solutlons to the world's cllmate and food and nutritlonsecurlty crisls and may represent a new chapter in the organization's evolvingefforts to help feed and sustaln the planet.
