This volume of essays is part of a series presenting the outcomes of a five-year research project examining the birth, development, and future of the emerging-market states. The project team, consisting of six research groups bringing together more than fifty researchers specialized in economics, history, and political science, was led by Dr. Tetsushi Sonobe, Vice President of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies.
