Around two-thirds of people surveyed believe that sentencing is not harsh enough.7 The average prison sentence is much longer now than it was 25 years ago. Yet over half (56%) of people surveyed believed sentences were shorter now—rising to three-quarters (75%) if those who said they didn’t know are excluded.
