Invisible Women is a key component of the Building Futures programme1 and is focused on the experiences of women serving sentences of over eight years in custody. Following the publication of our first Invisible Women briefing in November 2021, we have now developed Building Futures Working Groups in three women’s prisons. Establishing groups in HMPs Low Newton, Bronzefield and Send and expanding our Building Futures Network means we now have over 60 people in women’s prisons collaborating on this work.2 We have also recruited a woman with experience of a life sentence who is now in the community to help steer our focus, shedding light on the experiences of long-term prisoners post-release. What matters to women serving long-term sentences?Through facilitating monthly working groups in each of the three prisons, we have had an ongoing dialogue with the women about what matters to them. A combination of localised problems and more widespread issues have been identified, with overlap between the issues faced by women at different establishments.
