The 20th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 was a significant milestone in which to revisit the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda. The agenda is of central focus in the Arab region, not only due to its unprecedented peace and security challenges, but also due to the grave status of women, with half of the Arab countries ranking in the bottom third of the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index, particularly with regard to economic participation and opportunity, and political empowerment.1 While there are varying levels of political commitment to the WPS agenda in the Arab region, States have increasingly been advancing their respective agendas, as demonstrated particularly over the past five years.
