Pharmacovigilance (PV) in Spain demonstrates the power of a subnational, academic initiative to lay the groundwork for a national PV program. PV in Spain started as a research project designed by a university department in Catalonia in 1982 and has grown to consist of a Coordinating Center in the Spanish Medicines Agency and 17 regional centers.
