The Government of Indonesia’s National Plan of Action on MarinePlastic Debris (NPOA-MPD 2017-2025) outlines the ambitiousobjective to reduce marine plastic debris by 70 percentby 2025. One of the five pillars of this plan is dedicated to “reducingsea-based leakage” that contribute at least 20 percentof all marine plastic debris in Indonesia. Abandoned, Lost andDiscarded Fishing Gear (ALDFG) and Abandoned, Lost andDiscarded Aquaculture Gear (ALDAG) are major componentsof sea-based sources of marine debris, and cause significantimpacts on the environment, economy, livelihoods and foodsecurity. The scale of these impacts on fisheries, marine ecosystemsand human users has prompted international action, including under Sustainable Development Goal 14.
