India is at a crossroads – great opportunities are possible, but it may now need to makegood on commitments to open trade, property rights protection and competitivemarkets, if it is to play the global role it is capable of playing.While the UK Prime Minister’s visit to India has been postponed, there are still majoropportunities available for both countries. A trade deal between the UK and India,which has proved elusive for most countries, is very much a possibility. Such a dealcould have significant positive effects for the UK’s financial services, legal services,and food and drink industries. The potential for the UK to use the Enhanced TradePartnership (‘ETP’)1 and even the launch of FTA negotiations to lock the Indiangovernment into a broader coalition of willing partners could be a game-changer forthe Indo-Pacific region as it tries to reconcile with China as a major market but also ageopolitical competitor and rival.
