ADB's efforts and strategy in promoting rural development and food security are outlined in the Operational Plan for Sustainable Food Security in Asia and the Pacific.6 Under the plan, ADB has shifted its strategic focus from agriculture to a comprehensive multisector food security engagement approach with the goal of curbing food insecurity, particularly among the poor and vulnerable. ADB will help transform agriculture and food supply systems to increase farmers’ income, enable consumers access to safe and nutritious food, and stimulate economic activity in rural areas. The plan also highlights ADB’s role in promoting rural development by improving connectivity and services, establishing agriculture value chains with market infrastructure, and enhancing food security through better irrigation, farm inputs, and capacity building.
