Financial Stability Board (FSB) in coordination with the Bank for International Settlements’ Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures (CPMI) and other relevant international organisations and standard setters. The G20 cross-border payments programme aims to address long-standing challenges in the cross-border payments market, including high costs, low speed, limited access and insufficient transparency. This programme comprises the necessary elements of a globally coordinated response in the form of a set of 19 building blocks (BBs), based on a CPMI report to the G20 (CPMI (2020a, 2020b)). BB 19 is tasked with factoring an international dimension into central bank digital currency (CBDC) design to explore how CBDCs could potentially enhance cross-border payments. As mandated under Action 1 of this building block, in July 2021 the CPMI, BIS Innovation Hub, International Monetary Fund and World Bank published a stocktake of provisional domestic CBDC designs and experimentations and their potential to enhance cross-border payments (CPMI et al (2021)).
