The Holocaust in Romania had its own specific features which marked it out from the extermination of the Jews in other parts of Europe and the Soviet Union. The solution to what the military dictator Marshal Ion Antonescu euphemistically termed the “Jewish Problem” did not rely on the systematic, mechanical slaughter of Jews—although the Romanian and German armies murdered more than 45,000 Jews in Bessarabia and Bukovina in the summer of 1941, and Romanian forces put to death an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 Jews in Odessa in October of that same year— but rather on a cruel, dispassionate disregard for human life and dignity.
